Into the Great White Sands: Photographs by Craig Varjabedian

Description: “Into the Great White Sands: Photographs by Craig Varjabedian” is a color fine art photography exhibition of fifty images of White Sands National Monument, in southern New Mexico. Places tell their own stories. They hold memories and are spaces of geologic beauty, echoing the laughter of a child, visions of wonder, and accumulated histories. In Craig Varjabedian’s photographs of White Sands National Monument in southern New Mexico, these unique stories of heritage, habitat, and the natural world unfold, transporting you to an inspiring, luminous landscape beyond your imagination. Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert, creating the world’s largest gypsum dunefield. White Sands National Monument preserves a major portion of this unique dunefield, along with the plants and animals that live here. Accompaning the matted and framed photographs are two text panels, one about White Sands with a map and the other a bio of the photographer. An award-winning photography publication of the same title is available from the University of New Mexico Press. The photographer is available for presentations, book signings and to teach photography workshops. Here is a link to Dropbox with pdfs of the exhibition prospectus, a review of the exhibition and a letter of reference: ". . . One of the reasons to get lost in his photographs is because of their luxuriously reflective qualities: The big skies, his capture of the quiet landscape, his subjects’ remoteness. This show is meditative, and definitely a respite from the daily (and holiday-driven) hullabaloo. . .,” stated Rich Lopez in his review of the exhibition presented at the Museum of the Southwest in Midland, Texas.
